Bolesław Wallek-Walewski (1936)

Bolesław Wallek-Walewski (born January 23, 1885 in Lviv , † April 9, 1944 in Kraków ) was a Polish composer, conductor and music teacher.

The son of the theater director Adolf Walewski learned the piano with Wilhelmina Maliszowa and Wincenty Zellinger and music theory with Stanisław Niewiadomski in Lemberg. At the age of fifteen he continued his studies at the Kraków Conservatory with Władysław Żeleński (harmony and counterpoint), Wiktor Barabasz and Juliusz Mars and Alexander von Bandrowski (singing). From 1903 to 1906 he studied Polish studies at the Jagiellonian University . In 1906 he continued his musical training with Hugo Riemann and Arthur Prüfer continued in Leipzig.

After his return to Cracow in 1907, he taught music at St. Anna High School and was director (until 1943) of the choir of the Theological Institute in Stradom. From 1908 to 1920 he was a teacher of harmony and choral singing at the Kraków Music Institute, which he had founded with Klara Czopp-Umlaufowa , Bolesław Raczyński and Stanisław Giebułtowski . From 1910 he taught music theory, singing and composition at the Krakow Music Academy , where Mieczysław Drobner , Wacław Geiger and Edward Friedenberg were among his students. In 1914 he founded the Cracow Opera Society, whose choirs he directed until 1938.

From 1917 to 1919, at the invitation of Emil Młynarski , Wallek-Walewski was the conductor at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, where he directed the world premiere of Ludomir Różycki's Eros i Psyche . In 1919 he founded the men's choir Echo , with which he undertook concert tours to Holland, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Austria and Czechoslovakia until 1938. From 1925 he was conductor and head of the Musical Society in Kraków and at times led its symphony orchestra. He also worked as a conductor at various Krakow opera houses in the 1920s. As a conductor, Wallek-Walewski stood out primarily with choral works and songs. He also composed several operas and some piano and organ works.
