Władysław Marcjan Mikołaj Żeleński (born July 6, 1837 in Grodkowice , † January 23, 1921 in Krakow ) was a Polish composer .

Life

Żeleński studied with Franciszek Mirecki in Krakow , with Josef Krejčí in Prague and with Napoléon-Henri Reber in Paris . From 1872 to 1881 he taught music theory at the Warsaw Music Institute (today Fryderyk Chopin University for Music ), after which he headed the Krakow Music Academy , which was founded on February 7, 1888 . He composed two symphonies , four operas (including Goplana ), two overtures , a piano concerto , three masses , cantatas , motets , chamber music works, piano and organ pieces and songs .

His son, the Polish poet Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński was, in early July 1941 in Lviv together with other professors of the university as part of the mass murders in Lviv in 1941 arrested by German occupiers and murdered.
