Ralf Thienel

Ralf Thienel (born May 29, 1959 in Griesheim ; † August 1, 1995 in Munich ) is a former German rower who became vice world champion in double sculls in 1987 .

The 1.88 m tall Ralf Thienel initially rowed for RG Munich from 1972 , later he was active for RTHC Bayer Leverkusen . At the Junior World Championships in 1977 he won a double scull with Peter Desoi. At the Match des Seniors 1978, the unofficial world championships of the U23 age group, he and Bernd Fleischmann took sixth place in the double scull, in 1979 he won the double scull with Dieter Baier, Bernd Fleischmann and Georg Agrikola in the double scull .

In 1981 Thienel switched to oar rowing. In 1981 and 1982 he was German eighth champion, in 1983, 1984 and 1986 he took second place in this boat class. At the world championships in 1981 and 1982 he finished fifth with the German eighth, and in 1983 the boat came ninth.

In 1985 he competed with Andreas Schmelz in a double scull, after finishing second at the German championships, the two achieved fifth place at the world championships . In 1987, Schmelz and Thienel won the German Championships, and at the World Championships in Copenhagen they both won the silver medal behind the Bulgarians. In 1988, Schmelz and Thienel only came second at the German Championships. No double sculls were actually planned for the Olympic Games in Seoul , just before the Games Christian Händle and Ralf Thienel were nominated. In the final, the two finished fourth, two seconds behind the third-placed double scull from the Soviet Union.

Thienel was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1990, from which he died in 1995.
