Andreas Schmelz (born December 8, 1960 in Düsseldorf ) is a former German rower who won two world championship medals.
Andreas Schmelz from RG Eberbach began rowing in 1978 and trained with Harald Punt . At the World Rowing Championships in 1982 , he finished fifth with eighth . In 1983, the 1.96 m tall Schmelz won the German championship title in singles ahead of Georg Agrikola , and together they both won the championship title in double sculls . At the 1983 World Rowing Championships , Schmelz and Agrikola finished third behind the GDR boat with Lange / Heppner and the Norwegians Thorsen / Hansen . After winning the German championship title in 1984 and the Olympic boycott of the GDR rowers, Schmelz and Agrikola were considered promising candidates for a medal at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles , in the Olympic final they rowed to fourth place.
From 1985, Schmelz rowed in a double scull with Ralf Thienel , the two of whom took fifth place at the 1985 World Rowing Championships . In 1987, the two won the German championship title and won the silver medal behind the Bulgarian boat at the 1987 rowing world championships . Schmelz was twice German runner-up in double sculls in 1988 together with Ralf Thienel and in 1989 together with Armin Weyrauch , but was no longer used in international championships.
