Bernhard of Gaza

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernhard von Gaza (born May 6, 1881 , † September 25, 1917 ) was a German rower who became Olympic Knight in the One in 1908 .

Bernhard von Gaza from the rowing company Wiking Berlin won the title in single at the German rowing championship in 1907 and, together with Carl Ekkehard Ernst, also the title in double scull. In 1908 he took third place in the single, but was able to defend his title in the double scull with Ernst.

At the Olympic Games in 1908 , the rowing competitions were held on the Thames near Henley . The course was so narrow that only two boats could compete against each other. Bernhard von Gaza won his first two races against the Hungarian Ernő Killer and the Canadian Lou Scholes. In the fight for the final, von Gaza lost to the Englishman Harry Blackstaffe by giving up after his stretcher had come off. In the official result only places one (Harry Blackstaffe) and two ( Alexander McCulloch ) were rated. The two rowers Bernhard von Gaza and the Hungarian Károly Levitzky , who were defeated in the race for the finals, are listed in many sources as Olympic thirds analogous to boxing.

Bernhard von Gaza was German champion in the singles for the second time in 1911 and took second place in 1912 behind Kurt Hoffmann from Mainz. The championship in double sculls was held again in 1913 after an interruption from 1909 to 1912. Dr. Bernhard von Gaza won together with Wenzel Joesten . At the European Championships in Ghent, Wenceslaus and von Gaza took third place.
