Boetzelen started for the Berlin rowing club . In 1929 he won in one his first German Championship, where he five-time champion Walter Flinsch referred to the second place. In 1930 Boetzelen was able to successfully defend his title. In 1931 Herbert Buhtz moved from Magdeburg to Berlin RC and formed a double scull with Boetzelen. The two won the German championship in 1931, Buhtz won in the one, while Boetzelen took third place. At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , Buhtz and Boetzelen rowed the silver medal behind the two Americans Kenneth Myers and William Gilmore .
In 1933 Boetzelen moved to the position of the Berlin Gausport warden of the organization Kraft durch Freude . He later became a Gausport teacher for the NSDAP and supervised sport in the NS-Ordensburgen . On February 2, 1943, after the end of the Battle of Stalingrad , Boetzelen published an appeal to hold out in the Reichsportblatt. After the war, Boetzelen was able to move to the United States.
