Wacław Geiger

Wacław Geiger (born June 25, 1907 in Kraków , † April 30, 1988 in Zakopane ) was a Polish composer, conductor and music teacher.

Geiger had private piano lessons in Zakopane from 1915 to 1918. After the war he moved with his family to Jaworzno and attended high school in Chrzanów until 1927. He also took private lessons in organ, viola and cello and had piano lessons for some time from his aunt Wilhelma Geiger , a student of Aleksander Michałowski . From 1925 to 1926 he attended the Music Institute in Kraków, where he studied piano with Maria Naziemska , cello with Ferdynand Macalik , singing with Zofia Bandrowska-Osmecka and music theory with Barnardino Rizzi .

Due to financial problems he had to drop out of his studies and worked for some time as a silent film pianist in Krakow and neighboring cities. From 1927 he studied law for a year at the Jagiellonian University , after which he went to the Conservatory of the Kraków Music Society , where he studied solo singing with Helena Zboińska-Ruszkowska , conducting with Zbigniew Dymmek and composition with Bolesław Wallek-Walewski .

After graduation, he worked as an accompanist for the brass ensemble of the Musikgesellschaft, conductor at the theater of the House of Soldiers, musical director of the Lutnia Choral Society and the Lutnia Robotnica Ensemble . Between 1937 and 1939 he also appeared as a baritone at the Cracow Opera, and he also worked for the radio in Cracow.

After the Second World War he became the music director of the Polish radio in Krakow. He was the director of the Kraków Philharmonic Choir and the Ensemble of the Wesoła Gromadka Theater . From 1948 to 1950 he was director of the city symphony orchestra in Czestochowa, then until 1952 musical director of the music theater in Łódź. From 1953 he worked in Warsaw as a conductor at the State Operetta and in the academic year 1958–59 as a lecturer at the State Music Academy .

From 1959 to 1963 he lived in Bialystok, where he directed the local symphony orchestra until 1963 and taught at music schools and then worked as a choir conductor. He also directed the Lublin State Operetta from 1961 to 1963. From 1963 he lived in Zakopane, where he primarily concentrated on teaching, but also directed singing classes and choirs and was active in various music organizations.
