Ulysse Paquin

Ulysse Paquin (born July 20, 1885 in Alpena , Michigan , United States , † November 16, 1972 in Montreal , Canada ) was a Canadian opera singer ( bass ).

Paquin trained with the Jesuits first in Chicago , then in Montreal and became a bank manager. In 1913 he decided to pursue a career as a singer and took lessons from Albert Clerk-Jeannotte and Salvator Issaurel . He was choir and solo singer at Gesù Church for six years and became choirmaster at St-Sacrement Church in 1916 . In 1920 he went to New York . There he took lessons from Giovanni Martinelli , with whom he also appeared occasionally, and was solo singer at St Patrick's Cathedral and St Vincent-Ferrier Church .

In 1923 Paquin traveled to Paris , where he became a student of Rodolphe Plamondon . He performed with this in Paris and undertook concert tours with him through Québec (1924) and New England (1925). He also gave concerts as a solo singer and member of the Montreal Quartet and the Quatuor Arion . As an opera singer he sang Friar Lawrence in Gounods Roméo et Juliette , Escamillo in Carmen , Drum Major in Ambroise Thomas ' Le Caïd and Sganarelle in Poises L'Amour Médecin . Frédéric Pelletier dedicated Mensonges and Recueillement to him and Rodolphe Mathieu Hiver . Paquin was married to the pianist Luce Chamberland , a sister of the violinist Albert Chamberland .
