Joseph Behm

Joseph Behm (born April 25, 1815 in Alsórámóc , Kingdom of Hungary ; † May 8, 1885 in Wesprim , Kingdom of Hungary) was a Hungarian-German church musician and composer .

Life

Behm came from a family of musicians: his father Paul Böhm was a cantor teacher in Asórámóc. His father of the same name († 1822) was Kapellmeister at the Kalocsa Cathedral, a brother of this, Franz Böhm , performed his own compositions as a cantor teacher. Behm himself was choirmaster of the Eszterhazy family in Eisenstadt at a young age. When he came to Wesprim is not known, at least he was organist there as early as 1844 and was appointed cathedral music director in 1867. He tried to reform church music in Wesprim and suggested u. a. the creation of a pension fund for the cathedral musicians. He also managed to set up his own position as organist, which was held by the Bohemian organist and composer Karl Antos from 1875 . Behm composed a number of church music works, including several masses and offerings as well as a Salve Regina.
