Juan Bautista Massa

Juan Bautista Massa (born October 29, 1885 in Buenos Aires , † March 7, 1938 in Rosario ) was an Argentine composer, conductor and musician.

Massa studied in Buenos Aires and Italy and founded a private conservatory in Rosario. The city music school was named after Massa in honor of the city. He also taught at various institutions and was a member of various institutions, including a. he was director of the Asociación Coral Argentina .

Massa composed various works, including ballets, musical comedies, operas, operettas, zarzuelas, orchestral and chamber music pieces. He also wrote several tangos in the 1920s. His most famous works include:

  • El ruiseñor y la rosa (Opera), 1926; Based on a play by Oscar Wilde , premiered in 1926 at the Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires)
  • Zoraida (Opera), 1929
  • La Magdalena (Biblical Opera in Four Acts); Libretto by Ernesto Trucchi ; First performance at the Teatro Colón November 9, 1929
  • El cometa (ballet); First performance at the Teatro Colón on November 8, 1932; Massa conducted the performance himself
  • La muerte del inca (symphonic poem)
  • Tres canciones indígenas
