Karl Huber (musician)

Karl Huber ( Karl Hubay , Károly Huber ; born July 1, 1828 in Warjasch , Austrian Empire , † December 20, 1885 in Budapest , Kingdom of Hungary ) was a Romanian-German composer , violinist , conductor and music teacher .

Life

Huber initially took violin lessons from his father, then attended the Conservatory in Arad and continued his training in Vienna from 1841. In 1844 he became primary violinist in the orchestra of the Pest National Theater , where he was first concertmaster and conductor from 1852 to 1871. In 1856 he went on a concert tour through Europe as a violinist, after which he became a violin teacher at the National Conservatory . In 1866 he directed the Hungarian premiere of Richard Wagner's opera Lohengrin , for which the composer thanked him in a letter.

In the same year Huber went on a concert tour with the brothers Franz and Karl Doppler . In 1871 he became head of the Budapest Singers Association, ten years later head of the Hungarian National Singers Association. In addition to four successful operas, Huber composed orchestral works, string quartets, numerous violin works, songs and male choirs. As a recognized violin teacher, he published a violin school that appeared in two editions. His most important pupil was a son Eugene, who became known under his Magyarized name Jenő Hubay .
