Giuseppe dell'Orefice

Giuseppe dell'Orefice (born August 22, 1848 in Fara Filiorum Petri , † January 3, 1889 in Naples ) was an Italian composer .

Live and act

Dell'Orefice had clarinet and trumpet lessons in his youth and continued his education in Naples. There he first studied flute, then harmony and from 1862 composition at the Conservatory. In 1867 he left the conservatory to take part in the Italian War of Independence.

After his return he continued his studies at the Conservatory with Giorgio Miceli . At the Conservatorio di San Pietro he was a student of Saverio Mercadante . He began his artistic career as a choir director at the Teatro del Fondo , where he earned recognition as assistant conductor with a performance of Verdi's Rigoletto . As a composer he made his debut in 1872 with the ballet I fantasmi notturni at the Teatro San Carlo . In 1874 he composed his first opera Romilda dei Bardi , which premiered at the Teatro del Fondo and was performed at several Italian opera houses.

In 1875 the opera Egmont followed on behalf of the music publisher Lucca . This was not performed until 1878 at the Teatro San Carlo, whose director dell'Orefice became in the same year. In 1879 his comic opera Il segreto della duchessa was performed at several theaters in Naples . The musical comedy L'oasi followed in 1886 .

In addition to his stage works, dell'Orefice u. a. a polka capriccio , an overture for orchestra, chamber music works and songs. A mental illness led to his suicide in January 1889.
