Mercadante Theater

The Teatro Mercadante is a theater in Naples that was initially known as the Teatro del Fondo . It is located on Piazza del Municipio No. 1, and its front is opposite the west side of Castel Nuovo and near the Siglio dock. Together with the Teatro San Carlo , it was one of the two royal opera houses of the 18th and 19th centuries.

history

In 1779 it was opened as the Teatro del Real Fondo di Separazione and primarily used for opera buffé in Tuscan. Under the influence of Joseph Bonaparte , numerous French operas were also played there from 1806 to 1808. Don Giovanni , Le nozze di Figaro and Così fan tutte were first performed here in 1812–1815. Later, Gioachino Rossini , Giovanni Pacini and Gaetano Donizetti also worked here .

In 1871 it was renamed Teatro Mercadante in honor of Saverio Mercadante .
