Pietro Alessandro Guglielmi

Pietro Alessandro Guglielmi (born December 9, 1728 in Massa di Carrara , † November 19, 1804 in Rome ) was an Italian composer.

Life

The son of the conductor Jacopo Guglielmi (* around 1690 in Massa; † 1740 ibid) had first lessons with his father, then with Giacomo Puccini , from 1746 at the Conservatorio di Santa Maria di Loreto and finally with Francesco Durante in Naples . In 1762 he became court conductor in Dresden . An activity in Braunschweig which is suspected in older sources cannot be proven. From 1767 he worked with Felice Alessandri as composer and music director of the King's Theater in London. From 1772 he lived again in Naples. In 1793 he became cathedral music director at the Cappella Giulia in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, where he stayed until his death. From 1797 he also took over the post of Kapellmeister of San Lorenzo in Lucina . In 1803 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts .

The extremely productive composer wrote more than one hundred operas , nine oratorios , a requiem , a miserere , motets , symphonies , chamber music works as well as sonatas and other pieces for the harpsichord and pianoforte.

His son Pietro Carlo Guglielmi was also a successful opera composer.
