Giuseppe Sarti (baptized December 1, 1729 in Faenza ; † July 28, 1802 in Berlin ) was an Italian composer , conductor and music teacher .

Life

Giuseppe Sarti received his first training in his hometown, with Paolo Tommaso Alberghi , then in Bologna with Padre Martini and was organist at the cathedral in Faenza from 1748 to 1750, before he made his acquaintance with Pompeo in Armenia as an opera composer from 1752 and for some time that City Theater directed. In 1753 he joined the opera company of Pietro Mingotti as Kapellmeister and came to Copenhagen, where from 1756 to 1765 he was music teacher to the Danish Crown Prince and court conductor.

Sarti, who was maestro di coro of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice for about a year in 1766 , composed his intermezzo La giardiniera brillante during this time , which was performed in Rome in 1768.

From 1770 to 1772 he directed the court theater in Copenhagen, for which he composed several syngespiles in Danish. He lost that position in 1775 due to political intrigue related to bribery and then returned to Italy.

In 1779 Sarti was Kapellmeister at the Milan Cathedral , an office he won in a competition against Giovanni Paisiello . In 1784 he followed a call from Tsarina Katharina II as court conductor to St. Petersburg. On the way there he was received by Emperor Joseph II in Vienna and got to know Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - whose string quartets he found "barbaric" - as well as Antonio Salieri and Christoph Willibald Gluck . In St. Petersburg he was commissioned to set up a conservatory based on the Italian model and wrote Orthodox church music, but after the death of Catherine in 1796 and the murder of her son and successor Tsar Paul I , these plans came to a halt. He then entered the service of Prince Grigory Alexandrovich Potjomkin , with whom he traveled on his military campaigns against the Ottoman Empire . After Potjomkin died in 1791, Sarti was reappointed court composer. However, he wanted to return to Italy because of his poor health and died on the return journey in Berlin.

Sarti was also a teacher; Luigi Cherubini was one of his students in Milan . He also invented an acoustic apparatus for counting vibrations, the Petersburg concert pitch , which earned him honorary membership in the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart quotes a melody from Sarti's comic opera Fra due litiganti il ​​terzo gode as wind music in the table scene in the finale of the second act of Don Giovanni , together with a melody that has also become popular from his own Le nozze di Figaro and a third opera melody known at the time by Vicente Martín y Soler .

Of his operas, the following are worth mentioning: Le gelosie villane , Giulio Sabino (1781) and Le nozze di Dorina . Giulio Sabino achieved an extraordinary success in a performance in Vienna in 1785, in which the famous castrato Luigi Marchesi as Sabino and Catarina Cavalieri as Epponina took part. Antonio Salieri quoted some numbers from the popular opera in his opera satire Prima la musica e poi le parole . The pianist and composer Joseph Sardi also published his programmatic sonata op. 1 (subtitled as Sonata caratteristica ) Giulio Sabino ed Epponina for violin and piano in E major with the Viennese publishing house Artaria , which also quotes some numbers from the opera.
