Giovanni Bertati

Giovanni Bertati (born July 10, 1735 in Martellago , † 1815 in Venice ) was an Italian librettist .

Bertati wrote his first libretto in 1763, La morte di Dimone ("Dimon's Death"), to music by Antonio Tozzi . Two years later, L'isola della fortuna ("The Island of Happiness"), based on Bertati's libretto and Andrea Lucchesi's music, was performed in Vienna. In 1770 Bertati visited Vienna several times, where he worked with Baldassarre Galuppi . Emperor Leopold II awarded him the title of Poeta dei cesari teatro ("Poet of the Imperial Theater"), previously held by Lorenzo da Ponte , who had fallen out of favor with the Emperor a year earlier.

During his career as a librettist, Bertati devoted himself almost exclusively to writing drammi giocosi . His most famous libretto is Il matrimonio segreto ("The Secret Marriage") to the music of Domenico Cimarosa , first performed on February 7, 1792 in Vienna.

Lorenzo Da Ponte based his libretto on Mozart's Don Giovanni in part on Bertati's text.
