Antonio Tozzi
Antonio Tozzi (* around 1736 in Bologna ; † after 1812 there ) was an Italian opera composer .
Life
Antonio Tozzi received his training from Padre Giovanni Battista Martini and was accepted into the Accademia Filarmonica in 1761 . His first operas were performed in Venice from 1762, including the semiseria La morte di Dimone, the first setting of a libretto by Giovanni Bertati , which, with a great deal of machinery, choir and ballet, allows sixteen people to perform, including four deities. Tozzi married the Milanese opera singer Marianna Bianchi . From 1764 he worked alongside court conductor Johann Gottfried Schwanberger at the Braunschweig Opera House on Hagenmarkt , as a conductor and composer. In 1772 he was appointed court conductor in Munich , where he performed his tragedia Orfeo ed Euridice . The scandal triggered by a relationship with Countess Törring-Seefeld forced him to leave the city in 1775, which Leopold Mozart comments in a letter to his wife as follows: “You can always tell the story of Tozi and Countess Seefeld, see the people that the Welsh of all places are rascals. [sic!] ”(letter of March 3, 1775 to his wife Anna Maria in Salzburg).
After composing and producing another opera in Venice, Rinaldo , the libretto of which was to become the text source for Haydn's Armida , he moved his main area of activity to Spain in February 1776 , where he worked near Madrid and Barcelona alongside his own works (such as I due gemelli Castore e Polluce on the occasion of the birth of twins of the future King Charles IV. ) Performed operas by Martín y Soler , Paisiello , Cimarosa , Guglielmi and Anfossi .
Among Tozzi's twenty or so operas, some are Dramma giocoso , but with Dramma, Dramma Serio, Tragedia and Opera seria the heroic-mythological element clearly predominates. His work is characterized by great dramatic and melodic abilities and a compact style of orchestration, which often assigns each individual string part a specific task, for example rhythmic marking, motivic support, doubling of the singing voice or establishing a counter-melody. In the contemporary Diario de Barcelona he was often called the leading composer of Barcelona.
