from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Battista Borghi (* 25. August 1738 in Camerino , † 25. February 1796 in Loreto ) was an Italian composer of classical music .

Life

Giovanni Battista Borghi was and is often confused with the violinist Luigi Borghi and the harpsichordist Giovanni Borghi.

Borghi studied from 1757 to 1759 at the Conservatorio della Pietà dei Turchini in Naples . From 1759 to 1778 he worked as Kapellmeister at Orvieto Cathedral and then at the Basilica della Santa Casa in Loreto (until his death), often leaving his place of work to direct the performances of his operas throughout Italy, especially in Venice , Florence and Rome . His most famous opera was La morte di Semiramide from 1791. Borghi was best known for his church music, which can be found in many archives and libraries as prints or manuscripts. He composed numerous masses , around 20 oratorios and occasional works for church ceremonies. There are also settings of psalms , motets and litanies . In addition to a violin concerto, only 6 duettos for 2 violins are known of instrumental works.
