Francesco Gardi

Francesco Gardi (* around 1760 in Venice ; † around 1810 there) was an Italian composer who primarily composed operas .

Few reliable facts have come down to us about Gardi's life. As a composer, Gardi wrote numerous operas, especially Opere buffe , many on libretti by Giuseppe Maria Foppa . His first opera was premiered in Modena in 1786 . Otherwise he mainly worked in Venice, where he was director of the women's choir and composer at the Ospedale dei Derelitti from 1787 to 1791 . In 1797 he received the position of Kapellmeister of the Ospedale dei Mendicanti . We know from a note on the title page of the libretto La finta semplice (1798) that he was a member of the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna.

His one-act farces, which made him popular, were particularly valued. His relationship with Count Alessandro Pèpoli , who was one of the most important figures in the cultural life of Venice in the last years of the Republic, was particularly important . As an actor, playwright, impresario and publisher, Pèpoli had a disused theater in his Palazzo Cavalli in San Vidal / San Marco , which was restored between 1793 and 1795 and in which various dramas with music by Gardi were performed, such as Tancredi , the 1795 was performed there.

His last known work in 1809 was the cantata in honor of Joachim Murat , Napoleon Bonaparte's brother-in-law .

In 2017, two one-act plays by Gardi were performed in the Neuburg Chamber Opera .
