Giuseppe Nicolini or Niccolini (born January 29, 1762 in Piacenza , † December 18, 1842 ibid) was an Italian opera composer .

Life

Nicolini is considered one of the most productive composers of his time, he wrote 45 operas in all. He studied in Naples and began composing operas immediately after graduating. He had his breakthrough with the Baccanali di Roma (1801), and over the next decade he quickly became one of Italy's most popular opera composers. In 1811 he visited Vienna and his two operas Le nozze dei Morlacchi and Quinto Fabio Rutiliano were well received by the audience. In the opera I Baccanali di Roma had Angelica Catalani as Fecennia her debut whose part he wrote directly for the singer, for whom it was their first great triumph.

Subsequently, its star began to decline rapidly due to Gioachino Rossini's successes. To compensate, he was able to get involved in the music scene in his hometown. From 1819 he primarily devoted himself to creating religious music. In 1842 he died almost penniless.

Nicolini uses the orchestra with great skill. He often wrote a little more freely than the rules would have required. With increasing age he was considered a master of his art, who is rather unknown today, but who is still there to be discovered.
