Giovanni Battista Polledro (born June 10, 1781 in Piovà , † August 15, 1853 in Asti ) was an Italian violinist and composer . He was the last great representative of the violin school in Piedmont in the 19th century.

Life

Polledro's first teachers were the violinist Mauro Calderara and the concertmaster Gaetano Vai zu Asti. At the age of 15 he studied for a short time under Gaetano Pugnani and soon afterwards came into royal service in Turin . His first public appearance took place in 1797. In 1801 he moved to Milan and in 1804 became first violinist in the Bergamo theater . A short time later he went on a journey. He lived in Russia for five years , visiting St. Petersburg and Warsaw .

In the years 1811 and 1812 he spent the summer in Karlsbad , where he made the acquaintance of Ludwig van Beethoven , with whom he gave a concert on August 6, 1812. The concert took place in the Bohemian Hall next to the Gasthof Zum Auge Gottes on meadow No. 311.

From 1814 to 1823 he was concertmaster in Dresden and in 1823 he became first violinist of the Carlo Felice Royal Chapel in Turin and director of the Teatro Regio . In 1844 he retired and withdrew into private life.

His works are in the possession of the library of the Conservatory " Giuseppe Verdi " in Turin.
