Leon Yao Liang

Leon Yao Liang (* 1923 in Guanghui , Zhangbei ; † December 30, 2009 in Xiwanzi , Chongli ) was a Roman Catholic priest of the underground church and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Xiwanzi in the Chinese province of Hebei .

Life

Leon Yao Liang was ordained priest by the Roman Catholic Church in 1946 . He worked as a pastor in various parishes . When the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, he had to severely limit his pastoral work due to state pressure ; later he only survived as a vegetable farmer and timber seller. In 1956 he was finally interned in a labor camp and sentenced in 1958 to life imprisonment for his religious beliefs and refusal to deny his allegiance to Rome. He was not released until 1984, but his pastoral activities were limited.

In 2002 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Siwantze (Chongli-Xiwanzi), a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Suiyüan , in Hebei Province by Pope John Paul II . Approval from the state Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association has not been received since 2002. In addition, he had served as coadjutor of the diocese from Bishop Andrew Hao Jinli since 2002 .

In 2006 he was regularly restricted in the exercise of his episcopate. In 2006, he was sentenced to an additional two and a half years in prison for his initiative to end torture.
