Paolo Tommaso Alberghi (born December 16, 1716 in Faenza , † October 11, 1785 ibid) was an Italian violinist and composer .

Life

Paolo Alberghi received his first lessons from his older brother Don Francesco Alberghi , who was Kapellmeister at Faenza Cathedral from 1737 to 1760 . Between 1731 and 1733 Paolo Alberghi was a student of Giuseppe Tartini . From 1733 he was appointed violinist at Faenza Cathedral, and from 1760 until his death in 1785 he held the post of conductor. His son Ignazio Alberghi (1758–1836), Giuseppe Sarti and Cristoforo Babbi (1748–1814) should be mentioned as well-known students . All three worked at least for a time at the Dresden court, Babbi from 1780 as concertmaster and composer.

Alberghi's compositional work includes numerous sacred works for use in the cathedral, which are kept in the conservative style. In addition, he composed around 25 violin concertos and several violin sonatas. The slow movements of these works are simply composed and leave room for improvised ornamentation according to Tartini's teaching. He also created more than 40 trio sonatas . As is documented in contemporary sources, each year he composed numerous works for religious and urban occasions, so that a large part of the entire work can be considered lost.
