Gustav Bosse Publishing House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gustav Bosse Verlag is a music book publisher based in Kassel and an emphasis on music education publications.

history

The publishing house founded by Gustav Bosse (1884–1943) in Regensburg in 1912 mainly published scientific and popular science books on music in the first few decades. The focus was on the history of music in the 19th century, especially Richard Wagner and Anton Bruckner .

The publishing house is burdened because of its role during the National Socialism , as the NSDAP member Gustav Bosse sought to distinguish himself through publications that corresponded to the official party line - among others by Peter Raabe , the President of the Reichsmusikkammer . However, the roots of the nationalist attitude go back to the very beginnings of the publishing house.

The following Bosse publications can be found on the list of literature to be discarded, published 1946–53 :

  • Konrad Huschke : German music and our enemies . Regensburg: Bosses 1921.
  • Martin Karl Hasse : From German musical life . Regensburg: Bosses 1933.
  • Karl Hasse: From German masters . Regensburg: Bosses 1934.
  • Peter Raabe: Music in the Third Reich . 3 vols. Regensburg: Bosse 1935.
  • Karl Hasse: From German church music . Regensburg: Bosse 1936.
  • Peter Raabe: Willingness for culture in German musical life . Regensburg: Bosse 1936.
  • Fritz Stege : Images from German music criticism . Regensburg: Bosse 1936.
  • Robert Pessenlehner : From the essence of German music . Regensburg: Bosses 1937.
  • Walter Trienes : Music in danger . Regensburg: Bosses 1940.
  • Erich Valentin : A tune that sounds forever . Regensburg: Bosses 1940.

After Gustav Bosse's death, his brother Walther Bosse managed the company from 1943 to 1948. Since then, it has been continued by his son Bernhard Bosse (1921-2016), even after it was incorporated into the Bärenreiter factory ( Karl Vötterle ) in 1957 . The Regensburg location was initially retained.

In 1957 the company was converted into a KG, which continued to operate as Gustav Bosse Verlag in Regensburg and joined K. Vötterle (Bärenreiter-Verlag) as a personally liable partner.

Since the 1960s, the publishing program has expanded to include books and teaching materials on music education, sheet music editions for amateur music, the “ New Spiritual Song ” and choral editions with music from popular music.

In cooperation with the Association of German Music Schools , the first German-language program for early musical education, "Tina & Tobi", was published in 1970.

In 1993 the Regensburg office was relocated to Kassel. The program with a focus on music education remained independent and is adapted to new trends. Chor aktuell, a collection of simple choral movements that has now been published in editions for three age groups ( Chor aktuell, Chor aktuell junior, Chor aktuell Basis ), has become standard works for use in music lessons in schools . In addition to the programs for elementary musical education ( Tina and Tobi, Spiel und Klang, Timpano [2016]), choral music series such as jazz in the choir are successful.

Theodor Geißler , editor-in-chief and publisher of the Neue Musikzeitung, was the publishing director from 1987 to 1993 . He founded ConBrio Verlag in 1993 and took parts of Bosse Verlag with him.
