history

The place has origins at the end of the 19th century from the hamlet of Tabuões (Tabuais) belonging to Juiz de Fora, formerly the name of a fazenda that belonged to Barbacena in the 18th century . The area, which is considered the hinterland, was first developed through the Caminho Novo road leading from Rio de Janeiro to the northeast , the New Road, which was built due to the gold boom in the 18th and 19th centuries, but was not accessible all year round. On the occasion of the construction of the railway connection of the Estrada de Ferro Dom Pedro II between Juiz de Fora and Santos Dumont, a station in Tabuões was opened on October 12, 1890 between the route kilometers 309 and 310, which served to supply the surrounding mining companies. The connection to road and rail traffic in the 19th century was significant for the place, which was made clear by a stylized train locomotive and a truck in the city arms created in 1981.

A small urban infrastructure developed around the station, the increase in population led, after a change of administrative area on September 7, 1923, to the elevation as a separate district within the area of Santos Dumont and to the change of name on January 6, 1926 to the Brazilian form Eubanque. The place kept this name until it was granted city rights (status of a município) on December 30, 1962, when it was renamed Ewbank da Câmara in honor of the former engineer and long-time railway director José Felipe Neri Ewbank da Câmara (1843-1890) had made a name for himself in Minas Gerais.
