José Martínez (born January 28, 1890 in Buenos Aires , † July 27, 1939 ibid), called "El Gallego" (The Spaniard) , was an Argentine musician ( guitarist , pianist ), band leader and composer of Tango Argentino .

life and work

Martínez attended high school and later worked in a notary's office. During this time he taught himself to play the piano. In 1911 he formed a trio with Augusto Pedro Berto and Julio Doutry, which performed mainly in cafes. He later played in Berto's band, the Quinteto Augusto, which recorded the first record on Atlanta Records in 1914. Eduardo Arolas , known as El Tigre del bandoneón , brought him into his band to replace Agustín Bardi .

José Martínez was one of the great pianists in the early days of the formation of the classical tango orchestra. With his compositions he played an important role in the development of Tango Argentino as a new, independent art form. In 1916 he founded the Orquesta Canaro-Martínez together with the musician and composer Francisco Canaro . Together with Canaro and Osvaldo Fresedo , he also performed in the Cabaret Montmartre in the Parisian entertainment district of Montmartre in July 1916 . He wrote his eponymous tango composition Cleopatra for the 20th Century Fox film Cleopatra (1917) with Theda Bara in the lead role . From 1919 he worked musically with the bandoneonist and composer Rafael Rossi .

In 1918 Martínez was one of the founding members of the Sociedad Argentina de Autores y Compositores de Música (SADAIC), the Argentine copyright society.
