Antal Molnár (born January 7, 1890 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † December 7, 1983 ) was a Hungarian composer and musicologist.

Life

Molnár studied with Victor von Herzfeld in Budapest from 1907 to 1910 and then was violist in the Waldbauer Quartet and in the Dohnányi - Hubay piano quartet . He worked with Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály and from 1912 to 1919 he was a teacher at the Budapest Higher Music School. In the autumn of 1918 he was a participant in the Budapest "Sunday Circle " ( Vasárnap-Társaság ), a discussion group on philosophical and political issues, which was led by György Lukács in the house of Béla Balázs . Through Kodály's mediation, he received a position for music history, aesthetics, chamber music and music theory at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in 1919 , which he held until 1959.

Molnár composed an orchestral variation, a suite for double string orchestra, a cello concerto, Kurutz music for four Tárogató , chamber music works, a Missa brevis, a cantata and songs. In addition, he wrote numerous works on music history and theory.

Molnár received the Baumgarten Prize for his literary work in 1934 and the Kossuth Prize in 1957 .
