Giuseppe Agostini (conductor)

Giuseppe Agostini (born May 20, 1890 in Fano ; † December 9, 1971 in Montreal ) was a Canadian conductor and composer of Italian origin.

Agostini studied oboe, harmony and composition at the Pesaro Conservatory from 1901 to 1909. He ran bands in Fano and Cartoceto before moving to Montreal with his family in 1915. There he became first clarinetist in Peter Van der Meerschen's band and led his own bands in Montreal, in Beauharnois, Trois-Rivières and Valleyfield. From 1925 to 1933 he was music director, first of the Palace Theater , then of the Capitol Theater .

From 1933 to 1936 he was arranger and conductor at the CRBC station, including the program One Hour with You . In the same function, he worked for the CBC from 1936 to 1971 for programs such as Appointment with Agostini and Nos Futures Étoiles . In 1937 he appeared as a guest conductor with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra .

Agostini emerged as a composer with works such as an Ave Maria for voice and piano, Eternamente for four violins and organ, Griserie and Reviens for voice, The Three Trumpets for band, Marcia funebre for organ and other pieces for band and orchestra. His son Lucio Agostini became known as a conductor and composer, his daughter Gloria Agostini as a harpist.
