Joseph Braunstein

Joseph Braunstein (born February 9, 1892 in Vienna , † March 10, 1996 in New York City ) was a musician , writer and mountaineer .

Life

Joseph Braunstein came from a Jewish family in Vienna. During the First World War , his studies with Arnold Schönberg at the University of Vienna were interrupted. In 1920 he completed his studies in violin and history .

During his time in Austria he was an active mountaineer and member of the Donauland section .

In the following years he worked as a musician (among others in the Vienna State Opera and with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra ), writer and journalist . With the support of the Pope , he escaped to the United States via Italy in 1940 . In New York City he worked at the New York Public Library. From the 1950s he taught at several schools and universities.

He died in 1996 at the age of 104.
