Georges Jouatte

Georges Jouatte (born June 17, 1892 in Villefagnan , Département Charente , † February 13, 1969 in La Rochelle ) was a French opera singer ( tenor ) and vocal teacher .

Life

Jouatte began his career as a dancer at the Casino de Paris - to finance his vocal studies at the Paris Conservatory . In the 1920s he went to Germany to deepen his education. There he played a supporting role in the first full-length German sound film in 1929: The country without women (together with Conrad Veidt) and was active as a concert and operetta singer in Berlin.

Back in Paris, he first took the stage in 1932 at the Théâtre Mogador . After retraining to the tenor subject by Paul Cabanel and Louis Fourestier , he made his debut in 1934 at the Paris Opéra Garnier in Gounod's Faust .

He had great success here in 1936 in Richard Strauss ' Rosenkavalier in the presence of the composer. Other of his roles at the Paris Opera were Florestan in Beethoven's Fidelio , Admète in Gluck's Alceste , Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni , Erik in Wagner's The Flying Dutchman , Ulysse in Fauré's Pénélope and Armal in Chabrier's Gwendoline .

Since 1937 he has also been a member of the Paris Opéra-Comique ensemble , where he appeared in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea . During the occupation, tours to festivals in Salzburg, Vienna, Montreux, Rome, Cairo and the London Covent Garden Opera followed . This was followed by studio recordings for large record companies: Jouatte as solo tenor with the Grand Orchester Radio France is counted among the best Berlioz interpretations today . There are also u. a. a complete recording of Gounod's Faust with him in the title role on Columbia Records .

After the war he retired from the stage and accepted a position as professor at the Paris Academy of Music. He taught in his master class from 1946 to 1962. His main students were Régine Crespin , Alain Fondary , Mady Mesplé and Roger Soyer . After his retirement he retired to the Atlantic coast in the Charente-Maritime department and died seven years later in La Rochelle .

Honors

In 1953, Georges Jouatte was awarded the Order of Merit of the Legion of Honor in the Chevalier class.
