Gregori Garbovitsky
Gregori Garbovitsky ( Russian Григорий Гарбовский ; * 1892 with Yekaterinoslaw , Yekaterinoslav Governorate , Russian Empire ; † October 1954 in New York City , United States ) was a Russian- Canadian violinist , conductor and music teacher .
Live and act
Garbovitsky studied violin with Leopold von Auer and composition with Alexander Glasunow at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and then took over the direction of the Rostov Symphony Orchestra . After the October Revolution he went to Berlin, where he appeared as a violin soloist and conducted the Berlin Philharmonic several times in 1922 . In the mid-1920s he emigrated to Canada and initially performed as a violinist in Winnipeg . In 1927 he went to Calgary . There he directed the Palace Theater Orchestra and from 1928 to 1939 the Calgary Symphony Orchestra .
After guest conducting with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra , he was director of the Vancouver Junior Symphony from 1940 to 1946 . He later founded the Vancouver Orchestra and the Chamber Music Society and conducted the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra from 1949 to 1953 . During this time he also gave violin lessons. One of his students was the violinist Sydney Humphreys .
