Sydney Humphreys

Sydney Humphreys (born September 26, 1926 in Chilliwack , † February 16, 2015 ) was a Canadian violinist and music teacher.

Humphreys studied violin with Gregori Garbovitsky in Vancouver, Kathleen Parlow in Toronto, Thomas Matthews and Frederick Grinke at the Royal Academy of Music in London and with George Enescu in Paris. From 1952 to 1970 he directed the London Aeolian String Quartet , with whom he toured internationally and made recordings and radio recordings. He was also a member of the St Cecilia Trio from 1954 to 1965 , was concertmaster of the Bath Festival Orchestra under the direction of Yehudi Menuhin and a soloist with various orchestras of the BBC .

From 1972 to 1974 Humphreys was concertmaster of the BBC Scottish Orchestra , the Bornemouth Sinfonietta the following season and the Victoria Symphony Orchestra 1975-76 . He gave concerts with the Trio Victoria (with Robin Wood , piano and Jim Hunter , cello) in the CBC radio series Music to See and played the first violin in the Purcell String Quartet from 1979 to 1987 . 1991–92 he was again concertmaster of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra.

From 1970 to 1972 and from 1975 until his retirement in 2001, Humphreys headed the string department at the Victoria Conservatory of Music . His students included Jonathan Crow , Nikki Chooi , Gwen Hoebig and Emlyn Ngai .
