Nikki Chooi

Nikki Chooi (born January 31, 1989 in Victoria / British Columbia ) is a Canadian violinist of Chinese origin.

Chooi began his education at the Curtis Institute of Music with Joseph Silverstein and Ida Kavafian and continued it with Bill van der Sloot at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Sydney Humphreys at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and finally with Donald Weilerstein at the Juilliard School . In 2004 he won the Grand Award at the 2004 Canadian National Music Festival and first prize at the Montreal Symphony Standard Life Competition , in 2007 first prize at the Shean Strings Competition and the special prize at the 13th International Tchaikovsky Violin Competition in Moscow, and first prize in 2009 at the Irving M. Klein International String Competition , was laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2012 and winner of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition in 2013 .

As a chamber musician, he has performed with musicians such as Shmuel Ashkenasi , Ida Kavafian , Peter Wiley , Steven Tenenbom , Richard Roberts , Lara St. John , Laurence Lesser , Sean Osborne , Alex Fiterstein , Pamela Frank , Gary Graffman , Kim Kashkashian and his brother Timothy Chooi as well Members of the Guarneri String Quartet , the Juilliard String Quartet , the Vermeer String Quartet and the Orion String Quartet , as soloists with Canadian and international orchestras such as the Victoria, Edmonton and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Belgian National Orchestra, the Louisville Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra , the Auckland Philharmonia and the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra.

As a member of the Curtis On Tour ensemble, Chooi performed with Robert MacDonald and Roberto Diaz in 2009 . From 2015-16, he succeeded Zachary DePue as a member of the Time for Three ensemble (with Nick Kendall and Ranaan Meyer ). In the 2016–17 season he was concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra alongside David Chan .
