Peter Wiley

Peter Wiley (* 1955 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is an American cellist, chamber musician and music teacher.

Wiley was thirteen years old student of David Soyer at the Curtis Institute of Music . After a year as principal cellist in the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra , he became principal cellist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at the age of twenty . He made his debut as a soloist in 1986 at Carnegie Hall with the New York String Orchestra under the direction of Alexander Schneider . In 1987 he became a member of the Beaux Arts Trio as the successor to Bernard Greenhouse . He performed with the trio in more than a thousand concerts until 1998 and was nominated for a Grammy with them in 1998 . In 2001 he succeeded his teacher Soyer as cellist of the Guarneri String Quartet , of which he was a member until 2009. He forms the piano quartet Opus One with Ida Kavafian , Steven Tenenbom and the pianist Anne-Marie McDermott .

As a cello teacher, Wiley worked at the College-Conservatory of Music Cincinnati , the Mannes College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music . He has taught at the University of Maryland , Bard College Conservatory of Music and, since 1996, the Curtis Institute.
