Jonathan Crow

Jonathan Douglas Crow (born October 19, 1977 in Prince George / British Columbia ) is a Canadian violinist and music teacher.

Crow began his violin training at the age of six according to the Suzuki method and continued it in the music school of his hometown. From 1992 he studied with Sydney Humphreys at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and attended master classes at the Banff Center of the Arts . He was later a student of Yehonatan Berick at McGill University .

In 1996 he won the competition of the Orchester symphonique de Montréal , of which he became a member in 1998, initially as deputy section leader of the second violins, and from 1999 to 2006 second concertmaster. As a guest concertmaster, he appeared with the National Arts Center Orchestra , the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Brazilian Pernambuco Festival Orchestra , as a soloist under the direction of conductors such as Mario Bernardi , Kent Nagano , Charles Dutoit and Yehudi Menuhin , with whom he 1997 performed Peter Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra .

He has also appeared as a chamber musician with the Guarneri Quartet , the Emerson Quartet , the Vermeer Quartet and the Tokyo Quartet at numerous festivals, in 2004 he was part of the Triskelion String Trio with David Harding and Bryan Epperson , and from 2005 he joined Douglas McNabney and Matt Haimowitz from the Schulich School of Music at McGill University and founded the New Orford String Quartet with Andrew Wan , Eric Nowlin and Brian Manker in 2009 . In 2011 he became concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra .

Since 2000 Crow has given master classes and private lessons at the Scotia Festival of Music , the Orford Arts Center , the National Youth Orchestra of Canada , the Conservatoire de Musique de Saguenay and the Royal College in Calgary. He is particularly interested in contemporary music. He has given world premieres of works by Canadian composers such as Michael Conway Baker , Eldon Rathburn , Barrie Cabena , Rodney Sharman (Violin Concerto, 2011), Vivian Fung , Ana Sokolovic , Marjan Mozetich , Christos Hatzis , Ernest MacMillan and Healey Willan , and his repertoire includes compositions among others by György Ligeti , Alfred Schnittke , Brian Cherney , Leonard Bernstein , Rodney Sharman and Cameron Wilson .
