Rodney Sharman

Rodney Sharman (born May 24, 1958 in Biggar , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian composer, flautist and music teacher.

Sharman acquired his first musical knowledge self-taught. He composed, gave his first flute concerto at the age of sixteen and began to teach during this time. One of his first students was the pianist Eve Egoyan . He then studied at the Music School of the University of Victoria , the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg and the University at Buffalo . His main teachers were Murray Adaskin , Rudolf Komorous , Brian Ferneyhough , Morton Feldman , David Felder , Frederic Rzewski , Louis Andriessen and Lukas Foss . In 1984 he received first prize at the CBC Competition for Young Composers , and in 1990 the Kranichstein Music Prize .

1983–1984 Sharman was a guest composer at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht. As composer in residence , he worked with the Vancouver Symphony from 1997-2000 , the National Youth Orchestra of Canada in 2004 and the Victoria Symphony from 2008-2010 . From 1991 to 1995 he was President of the Canadian Section of the International Society for Contemporary Music , and from 1993 to 1998 President of the Canadian League of Composers . He has worked as a teacher at Wilfrid Laurier University , the University of British Columbia Music School and Simon Fraser University .

His extensive compositional work, including operas and ballets, instrumental concerts, chamber music works, pieces for solo instruments, choral works and songs, but also cabaret songs, have been performed in more than 40 countries around the world and at festivals such as the Bourges Festival in France, Ars Musica in Belgium, International Gaudeamus Music Week , Festival Confrontaties and Holland Festival in the Netherlands, Wien Modern in Austria, the Nyyd Festival in Estonia, the Almeida Festival and the Huddersfield Festival in Great Britain, the World Music Days of the International Society for New Music in Canada, Mexico, Germany and Switzerland, the North American New Music Festival , the New Music Across America , the Sub-Tropic Music Festival and Bang On A Can in the USA and at the Darmstadt Summer Courses in Germany.

The performance took place under the direction of Kazuyoshi Akiyama , Mario Bernardi , Andrey Boreyko , Sergiu Comissiona , Charles Dutoit , Hans Graf , Eri Klas , Pavel Kogan , Tania Miller , Ed Spanjaard , Bramwell Tovey , Bruno Weil and other conductors, with ensembles like that Aventa Ensemble , the Vancouver New Music Society , Arraymusic , the Ensemble Exposé , Het Nieuw Ensemble , the Arditti String Quartet , the Quatour Bozzini and the St. Lawrence String Quartet and with soloists such as the pianists James Clapperton , Anthony de Mare , Michael Finnissy , Louise Bessette , Yvar Mikhashoff and John Snijders , the organist Hans Ola Ericsson , the violinist Denise Lupien , the double bass players Stephano Scodanibbio and Robert Black , the flutist Camilla Hoitenga , the harpsichordist Colin Tilney , the harpists Erica Goodman , Ernestine Stoop , Sharlene Wallace and Rita Costanzi and the singers Valdine Anderson , Brett Polegato , Benoit Boutet and Romain Bischoff .

In collaboration with the choreographers Marie-Josée Chartier , David Earle , Christopher House and James Kudelka , ballets were created for the dancer Benoît Lachambre , the Toronto Dance Theater , the Oregon Ballet Theater , the San Francisco Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada . The chamber opera Elsewhereless, based on a libretto and directed by filmmaker Atom Egoyan , premiered in Amsterdam in 1998 and then played more than forty times in Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver.
