Emlyn Ngai

Emlyn Ngai is a Canadian violinist and music teacher.

Life

Ngai studied at McGill University , Oberlin College Conservatory, and Hartt School . His teachers included Frona Colquhoun , Sydney Humphreys , Thomas Williams , Eugene Drucker , Philip Setzer, and Marilyn McDonald . At the Locatelli competition in Amsterdam in 1995 he won first prize in the baroque violin category .

As a member of the Adaskin String Trio (with Steve Larson and Mark Fraser ) he has given concerts in Canada and the United States, including the Merkin Concert Hall , Pittsburgh's Frick Art and Historical Center and the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival . He is concertmaster of the Philadelphia-based baroque orchestra Tempest di Mare and first violinist of the Tempest di Mare Chamber Players , deputy concertmaster of the Carmel Bach Festival Orchestra and first violinist of the Carmel Festival Quartet . As a chamber musician, he has also performed with ensembles such as Apollo's Fire , the Boston Baroque Players , the Smithsonian Chamber Players , the Ensemble Tafelmusik and the Washington Bach Consort . He has taught at Boston University , McGill University and Mount Holyoke College and is a teacher of modern and baroque violin, chamber music and performance practice at Hartt School , assistant director of chamber music and co-director of Hartt School Collegium Musicum .
