George Washborne Morgan

George Washborne Morgan (born April 9, 1822 in Gloucester , † July 1892 in Tacoma , Washington ) was an American organist and composer.

Life

Morgan performed as an organist in England at the age of eight and became organist at the cathedral in his hometown at the age of twelve. He was soon considered a serious competitor of the organ virtuoso Sir Henry Smart and from 1851 was organist at two churches in London.

From 1853 Morgan lived in New York, where he held various organist positions. He was considered one of the most important American church organists and was the first American concert organist. In addition to numerous organ works, he composed songs, anthems and a morning service.
