The Teatro Dal Verme is a theater and opera house in Milan , Italy .

history

The Teatro Dal Verme is located on Via San Giovanni sul Muro 2, where the Politeama Ciniselli theater used to be. The opera house was commissioned by Count Francesco Dal Verme and designed by the architect Giuseppe Pestagalli. The opening took place on September 14, 1872 with a performance of the opera Les Huguenots by Giacomo Meyerbeer . In its heyday at the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century, the Teatro Dal Verme was one of the leading opera houses and was the location of numerous world premieres, including a. by Giacomo Puccini's Le Villi (1884) and Ruggero Leoncavallo's opera Pagliacci (1892). The house was used as a cinema in the 1930s and was largely destroyed during World War II. After the partial reconstruction in 1946, the Teatro Dal Verme was used for various purposes. In the 1990s, the building was modernized and today has the “Sala Grande” with 1,436 seats, the smaller “Sala Piccola” with around 200 seats and the “Sala Terrazzo” exhibition room. Since September 2001 the Teatro Dal Verme has been run by the Fondazione I Pomeriggi Musicali, whose orchestra it houses.
