Jan Cherniavsky
Jan Cherniavsky (born June 25, 1892 in Uman , Ukraine, † January 8, 1989 in Toronto ) was a Canadian pianist of Ukrainian origin.
Cherniavsky came from a very musical family. As early as 1901 he appeared together with his brothers Leo and Mischel as the Cherniavsky Trio .
From 1901 to 1906 he was on a very successful European tour with his brothers. In 1905 his family emigrated to Austria and settled in Vienna . There he received private lessons from the pianist Theodor Leschetizky , who influenced him greatly.
Cherniavsky split in 1934 after the Cherniavsky Trio's farewell concert in Salt Lake City and stayed in Canada. Since 1922 he was a Canadian citizen. He married a Canadian and, in addition to his performances, also made a great contribution to music education. Together with the composer Allan de Ridder , he was also instrumental in building up the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
In 1958 he went on another tour of South Africa with his brothers; but the trio could no longer build on their earlier successes.
Cherniavsky founded the Cherniavsky Junior Music Club in 1967 . There an attempt was made to introduce children and young people to classical music. As a member, children were given free or at least discounted tickets for concerts and operas, but musical training should also be improved. In 1978 the main sponsor "Chevron Canada" withdrew and in 1985 the association had to disband for financial reasons.
Jan Cherniavsky died on January 8, 1989 in Toronto at the age of almost 97.
