Kazimieras Viktoras Banaitis
Kazimieras Viktoras Banaitis (born March 5, 1896 in Vaitiekupiai , Šakiai County , † December 25, 1963 in New York , USA ) was a Lithuanian composer .
Life
Banaitis studied in Prague and from 1922 to 1928 in Leipzig with Sigfrid Karg-Elert (composition) and Otto Keller (piano). He then taught at the Kaunas Conservatory , where he became a professor in 1938. From 1944 to 1949 he lived in Germany, then he moved to New York.
Banaitis composed a. a. over four hundred songs , two cantatas , piano works and chamber music in late romantic and impressionistic style. His main work was the opera Jūratė ir Kastytis (1955), the performances of which he did not live to see in Chicago in 1972 and in Kaunas in 1996.
