Tadeusz Szeligowski (born September 13, 1896 in Lemberg , † January 10, 1963 in Poznan ) was a Polish composer and music teacher .

Life

Szeligowski attended grammar school and the Galician Conservatory of Music in Lemberg, where he had lessons in piano with Vilém Kurz and in music theory with Stanisław Niewiadomski . From 1918 to 1922 he studied law at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow , and from 1921 to 1928 musicology as an external student. His teachers were Bolesław Wallek-Walewski and Zdzisław Jachimecki .

In 1923 he went to Vilnius , where he taught music history at the Conservatory from 1925 to 1927 . With a scholarship from the Ministry of Education, he studied in Paris from 1929 to 1931 with Nadia Boulanger and Paul Dukas . After his return he taught music theory and composition at the Music Academy in Poznan . During the Second World War he was organist at the Church of St. Kazimierz in Vilnius.

In 1945 Szeligowski became director of the Lublin Music School and in 1947 director of the State Opera School in Poznan. At the same time he directed the Poznan Philharmonic. In 1950 he received the title of professor. From 1951 to 1954 he was President of the Board of Directors of the Polish Composers Union. In 1961 he founded the Poznańska Wiosna Muzyczna Festival .
