Yuri Karlovich Arnold ( Russian Юрий Карлович Арнольд ; born November 1, jul. / 13. November  1811 greg. In Saint Petersburg , † July 8 jul. / 20th July  1898 greg. In Karakasch in Simferopol ) was a Russian composer , musicologist , Music critic , choir director and music teacher .

Arnold joined the army after studying in Tartu . After his departure in 1838 he lived as a composer. From 1863 to 1870 he was a music journalist in Leipzig and wrote for the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik . In 1870 he founded a private music school in Moscow , which he directed until 1894. Occasionally he read at the University of Moscow on music history and acoustics .

Arnold composed, among other things, an opera , two operettas and two overtures . He researched and published on Russian church music . His memoirs appeared in 1892. Juri Arnold contributed significantly to the spread of Russian music abroad through his journalistic activities and his translations of operas and songs.
