Wilhelm Franz Speer

Wilhelm Franz Speer (born January 24, 1823 in Friedland , † December 15, 1898 in Zadar , Kingdom of Hungary ) was a German composer , organist and choir conductor .

Life

It is not known about Speer's musical training. From 1862 to 1871 he was the cathedral organist in Timisoara. In 1862 he wrote a series of articles on old and new music for the Timişoara newspaper. In the following year he published a piano school entitled Practical Guide to Playing the Piano . From 1871 to 1893 he was the successor to Moritz Pfeiffer Kapellmeister in the Timisoara Cathedral . In 1871 he was a member of the Timişoara Philharmonic Society and was appointed choir director with Heinrich Weidt . He then led the choir together with Martin Nováček (from 1871 to 1876), Karl Rudolf Karrasz (until 1881), with Nováček and Karrasz (until 1882) and finally again with Nováček (until 1889).

Speer's works include a Christmas motet ( Quem vidistis pastores , 1873), three offertories, two graduals and two masses, a requiem, the oratorio The Kings in Israel based on a libretto by Wilhelm Smets, and the comic opera Der Dorfbarbier .
