Gaetano Capocci

Gaetano Capocci (born October 16, 1811 in Rome ; † January 11, 1898 there ) was an Italian church musician , organist and composer .

Life

As a child, Gaetano Capocci took organ lessons from Sante Pascoli , the organist at St. Peter's Basilica , and continued his training with Valentino Fioravanti and Francesco Cianciarelli . In 1831 he received a diploma as organist at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia , and in 1833 a diploma as a composer. In 1839 he became organist at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore . In 1855 he was appointed maestro direttore of the Cappella Pia Lateranense at San Giovanni in Laterano , a position he held until his death. His successor was his son Filippo Capocci . In addition to numerous masses and motets , Capocci composed the oratorios Battista and Assalonne . His responsori for Holy Week became known .
