Baron August Ernst von Steigentesch , (born January 12, 1774 in Hildesheim , † December 30, 1826 in Vienna ) was a German-Austrian poet, writer and diplomat.

Life

He was born the son of a cabinet minister from the Electorate of Mainz , entered the Austrian military in 1789 and worked diligently as a soldier and diplomat, also at the side of General Karl Philipp zu Schwarzenberg , against Napoléon Bonaparte . He advanced to major general and was Austrian military representative at the Bundestag until 1820 .

In 1814 he worked with Ioannis Kapodistrias , Stratford Canning and Claude Marie Gustave de Damas on the Swiss Federal Treaty .

In addition to numerous comedies, in which he described the small weaknesses and follies of people with great truth, and which remained on the stage for a long time, he also published poems (4th edition, Darmstadt, 1823) and a number of stories. His collected writings appeared in 6 volumes (Darmstadt, 1820).

In 1909 the Steigenteschgasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him.
