Pancraz Krüger (born May 12, 1546 in Finsterwalde , † October 23, 1614 in Frankfurt (Oder) ; also Pancratius Crüger ) was a German humanist and educator.

Life

After a brief activity as rector of the Braunschweig Aegidi School, he became professor of poetry and the Latin language there in 1576 when the University of Helmstedt was founded .

In 1580 the council of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck appointed him rector of the Latin school of the Katharineum . Shortly after taking office, there was a lengthy dispute with the superintendent Andreas Pouchenius the Elder . Krüger was concerned with his independence in pedagogical questions, for example with his preference for Ramism over the previously taught melanchthoniasm . Pouchenius, who already knew Krüger from Braunschweig and had played a major role in his appointment to Lübeck, saw the religious school supervision in danger and criticized Krüger publicly from the pulpit . After an attempt at mediation by the Marian pastor Michael Rhau failed in 1586 , Krüger was excluded from the Lord's Supper through church discipline. Pouchenius emphasized the responsibility of the church to the council that Crüger had brought in, the owner of the sovereign church regiment in the Free Imperial City, but was only able to partially assert itself. Krüger was dismissed after obtaining an opinion from the theological faculty in Tübingen , but at the same time the council exhorted the preachers by decree to moderate the application of church discipline and thus restricted the spiritual autonomy in questions of order and the freedom of spiritual criticism.

Krüger left Lübeck in 1589, became rector of the Latin school in Goldberg (Mecklenburg) and finally, in 1594, professor of the Greek language at the University of Frankfurt (Oder) . In 1598/99 he was the rector's office.
