Michael Rackelmann (also: Rakelmann ; * around 1554 in Weida ; † September 1610 in Meißen ) was a German educator and Evangelical Lutheran theologian.

Life

Nothing is known about Rackelmann's origin. Due to the fact that he describes himself as coming from Weida in later records, it can be assumed that this is his place of birth. It first became tangible when he matriculated at the University of Leipzig in the summer semester of 1570 . Here he will first have attended philosophical lectures in accordance with the customs of the time. In October 1576 he moved to the University of Wittenberg , where he continued his education, on March 4, 1578, he acquired the academic degree of Master of Philosophy. In 1580 he became a deacon of the small town of Zahna . Drawn more to school service, on December 22, 1585, he switched to the Kreuzschule in Dresden as rector .

During the founding times of the Evangelical-Lutheran Saxon Church, he had to fend off some envious people here. He was defamed for being a follower of the theology of John Calvin . Since such accusations of cryptocalvinism in Saxony at the time led to persecution and even to execution, the Dresden council members decided to release him from this position on February 8, 1589. However, due to his beliefs, he was later able to prove that he was a good Lutheran. Since he was no longer employed and still had to support his family, he accepted an appointment as rector at the Katharineum in Lübeck in October 1589 , where he succeeded Pancraz Krüger . Wanting to return to his Saxon homeland, on April 27, 1593 he took over the position of vice-principal at the electoral Saxon rural school St. Afra in Meißen . He died here as a senior and was buried in Meißen on September 14, 1610.
