Francesco De Martino (born May 31, 1907 in Naples ; † November 18, 2002 ibid) was an Italian lawyer and politician . Between 1963 and 1976 he was three times (1963–1968, 1969–1970, 1972–1976) chairman ( segretario ) of the Partito Socialista Italiano (PSI).

Career

Francesco De Martino studied at the University of Naples Federico II in the 1920s and dealt with Roman legal and economic history. Already during this time he developed socialist views and called for the left to stand up more clearly against the rise of the fascists. During the fascist rule he stayed in Naples.

In 1942 De Martino joined the moderate socialist Partito d'Azione , which was absorbed into the PSI after the end of World War II . From 1943 to 1983 he was a socialist member of the Chamber of Deputies . He always remained convinced that a pooling of all left forces (including the communists) was necessary for an effective government.

In the governments of Mariano Rumor (1968–69, 1970) and Emilio Colombo (1970–1972) De Martino was Deputy Prime Minister ( Vicepresidente del Consiglio dei Ministri ). In the 1970s he ran twice for the office of President : in 1971 he received the most votes in the first ballot, but withdrew after the 21st ballot; In 1978 he received only a few votes. (He was again a candidate in 1992, again with a few votes in several ballots.) He resumed his academic career at the University of Naples, where he became a full professor of Roman law.

De Martino was appointed Senator for Life by Francesco Cossiga in 1991 .
