Friedrich Brandes (theologian)

Friedrich Heinrich Brandes (born April 25, 1825 in Bad Salzuflen , † July 23, 1914 in Bückeburg ) was a German Reformed theologian.

Life

Friedrich Heinrich Brandes studied Protestant theology, philosophy, literature and history at the University of Berlin and in 1853 became an early preacher and rector in his hometown. In 1856 he took over the pastoral office of the reformed community in Göttingen and in 1891 changed to the office of court preacher at the court of the princes of Schaumburg-Lippe in Bückeburg, where he retired in 1910. From 1878 to 1899 he was the moderator of the Confederation of Reformed Churches in Lower Saxony , a predecessor organization of the Federation of Evangelical Reformed Churches in Germany . He campaigned for the establishment of the Reformed League and served as its first moderator from 1884 to 1911.

Brandes published several books and several essays on the theology and history of Reformed Protestantism and a number of biographical articles for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie . He also wrote poems and plays and edited a selection of the poems by Ludwig Uhland .

The University of Heidelberg awarded Brandes an honorary theological doctorate in 1867 .
